A New Bright and Inclusive Cereal Bar Graces New Paltz

Grinds and Grains has over 25 different varieties of cereal, along with 10 flavors of milk to choose from.

Munch on this — there are not a lot of cereal bars in the Hudson Valley. A few in New York City but not many in the Valley. But on May 25, Grinds and Grains opened its doors in New Paltz. Owners Melanie Caron and Rashid Chambers saw the idea of a cereal bar and lacking in the area and brought the concept over with a positive flair.

The groovy rainbow staircase welcomes customers upstairs for a sitdown breakfast with numerous flavors of cereal to choose from. You can even have your cereal wrapped up in a to-go container if you’re on the move.

Grinds and Grains aims to be inclusive with folks who are gluten-free or vegan, and they have sourced vegan, dairy free, gluten-free, and traditionally made pastries from Flour & Lead Bakery in New Paltz. Along with the locality element, all the tables and bright artwork in store are made from artists and craftsmen in the Hudson Valley.

Currently there are 25 different cereal flavors — including vegan options and locally made granola from Raspberry Fields Farm located in Marlboro. There are even 10 flavors of milk to choose from and it doesn’t end there. Pile some toppings on it and voilà. There are a total of 20 toppings like almonds, fresh strawberries, bananas, blueberries, sprinkles, and more.

“I would recommend that [customers] open their minds and mix and match. We allow people other than the granola, to combine as many cereals they can fit into the bowl,” Caron says.

The grinds part of Grinds and Grains specializes in lattes, cold brews, double espressos, Americanos, cappuccinos, and red eyes, all with beans from Partners Coffee Roasters, located in Brooklyn. Different flavors of coffee include “Brooklyn,” a medium roast, a dark roast called “Manhattan,” and “Flat Iron” espresso.

“I wanted to open an establishment that was unique and vibrant and made someone’s day a little (or a lot) better,” Caron says. “It doesn’t take a lot to have a positive impact on someone’s day.”

Be on the lookout for live music events, cupping events with coffee roasters, and birthday parties in the future.
