For women who love beer, there’s nothing more irritating than being expected to sip only fruity cocktails garnished with little umbrellas. Luckily, there’s now a way for lady brew enthusiasts in the Hudson Valley to make their love of craft beer known.
Barley’s Angels, an international organization created by (and designed for) women who love craft beer, has launched a Hudson Valley chapter. Those who have an appreciation for delicious beer — and who want to expand their knowledge and understanding of brewing — are encouraged to join.
The Hudson Valley chapter, which aims to meet quarterly (or every other month; the next get-together is in May), is co-founded by Sara Capozzoli of Poughkeepsie and Sandy Bredthauer of Hopewell Junction.
“Women account for over 25 percent of total beer consumption in the U.S., yet the beer industry not only remains male-dominated, but women are largely ignored and marginalized in beer culture,” says Capozzoli.

Barley’s Angels of the Hudson Valley’s inaugural event, dubbed Local Craft Beer 101, will be held on Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m. at Mill House Brewing Company in Poughkeepsie. Attendees can enjoy samplings of five award-winning beers, learn about the beer-making process, and partake in a beer and food pairing discussion with Mill House Brewing Company’s brewmaster. Free gifts, games, prizes, and pop-up shops are included in the $30 ticket price.
“We are so excited to bring Barley’s Angels to the Hudson Valley and help women become empowered, educated consumers through local events that also provide networking opportunities and a place to enjoy one of the oldest beverages humans have produced,” Capozzoli says.
Other Barley’s Angels chapters host beer and chocolate tastings, lessons on cooking with beer, and even beer-and-Girl-Scout-cookie pairings (Chicago Chapter). The Hudson Valley Chapter plans to host similar events in the future.
