7 Restaurant Openings We’re Looking Forward to in 2018

2018 is just getting going, and so are our appetites.

Caskade Kitchen & Bar

When: Opened in January
Where: Cohoes

This gastropub is a bit of an anomaly, whipping out chic, metropolitan dishes three hours north of New York City. We’re talking arancini with wild mushrooms, smoked mozzarella, and saffron aioli; delicata squash rings in IPA batter, herbed yogurt, and pomegranate; tuna tartare with jicama, kumquat, chili gastrique, and fried wonton — not to mention their cocktails. (Can you say blood orange mimosa?)

Where: Chatham

This café aims to please the whole family with comfort food that caters to a variety of diets: vegan, ketogenic, gluten-free, paleo, and everything in between. Founded by husband and wife team, Christopher Knable and Nicole Maggio Knable, Main St. Goodness is also home to PieconicNY, their newly minted bakery where Christopher makes hand-wrought pies without the help of “machines, mixes, or shortcuts.” With flavors like Empire State Bourbon Chocolate Walnut, Thor’s Oatmeal Coconut Chocolate, and Freebird Chicken Pot Pie, the goodness is truly iconic. 


Sugar Loaf Tap House

When: Mid-March
Where: Sugar Loaf

Residents of Sugar Loaf have mourned the closing of the Barnsider Restaurant for years now — but not anymore. Sugar Loaf Tap House will resume serving this crafty community in Orange County. Heather and Marco Solari, owners of the Copper Bottom Grill in Florida, decided to restore the building and open a new restaurant with similar rustic charm. The menu will focus on recognizable American comfort food with culinary twists. On top of that, diners can expect an extensive selection of small plates, some gluten-free and vegan offerings, and a dozen taps featuring local craft beers, which will likely be incorporated into the food concepts as well. Marco Solari — and many Sugar Loaf residents — can’t wait for the taps to flow and for this community hub to open its doors again.

Melzingah Tap House

When: April
Where: Beacon

Beacon residents are about to go from rueful to brew-full: In the former space of beloved hipster haven, The Hop, Dana and Kevin Collins will open Melzingah Tap House, a beery addition to their other restaurants, The Barking Frog and Publick House 23. “We want people to walk in and feel completely at home,” says Dana Collins. Everything about the tap house — from the décor to the cuisine to the atmosphere — will reflect that concept. While the Collins were fans of The Hop, they’re not trying to resurrect the restaurant. Instead, Melzingah’s menu will have a foundation in high-quality, approachable cuisine like burgers, wings, and steak, with more eclectic items incorporated via rotating specials. The best part? There will be 23 craft beer taps and a canning machine on site, so folks can not only try exclusive craft beers, but also bring their favorite brews home.

Where: Garrison Landing

Owners Shelley Boris and Kimball Gell will open Dolly’s, a café-meets-pub restaurant that will serve as a brick-and-mortar expansion of their catering business, Fresh Company. Boris, who is the Executive Chef behind the restaurant, says there will be a seasonal menu (with most ingredients sourced locally) that ranges from burgers to seafood dishes. Their aim for Dolly’s is versatility — an ideal destination for first dates, day-trippers, and families alike (there will also be soft serve ice cream available).  With an outdoor patio and prime real estate on the riverfront, Dolly’s is set to be an idyllic dining spot.



The Haymaker

Where: Rhinebeck

From the team at Grand Cru Beer & Cheese Market comes another Rhinebeck eatery, The Haymaker. Self-described as a “restaurant with [a] family friendly beer garden,” The Haymaker will be serving comfort food and craft liquids in its sleek onyx homestead building.


Hudson Taco

When: Fall 2018
Where: Newburgh

Opening in the West Shore Train Station, Hudson Taco will be a full service restaurant and bar with 360-degree river views and a relaxed atmosphere.  Using Hudson Valley produce, meats, and ingredients, Chef Jason Kooperman and Chef Matt Sherry will serve a plethora of tacos with fillings that include beef, pork, fish, and vegetarian options; behind the bar cocktails will be designed with an emphasis on fresh fruit juices. There will also be a “tequila cellar” with a private dining room, and an outdoor deck where diners can take further advantage of the panoramic views. With Pizza Shop in the same building, West Shore Train Station is officially a one-stop shop for deliciousness.
