6 Local Blackberry and Apricot Jams

Local jams help us savor the summer’s sweetest fruits

This season is all about the fresh fruits — especially blackberries and apricots, our two newest obsessions — that are ripe for the picking at the Valley’s many orchards and farms. And there’s a way to enjoy all that bounty when the temperatures begin to chill, too. Here, we list some of our favorite local jams (and where you can find them). Start slideshow »

Where to find it: Eleanor’s Best, Garrison
Price: $7.95 for an 8-ounce jar
Description: “When I was a child, I used to raid an enormous stand of wild blackberry bushes behind a potting shed across the road from my Grandma Eleanor. I could not eat enough of them. The first time that I came in with my face painted with blackberry juice, she was horrified and thought I had poisoned myself. I ran out laughing, and brought her back some tied in a handkerchief. She pulled a bucket from a metal cabinet on the side of her kitchen and instructed me to fill it up. From those berries, she whipped together this jam, along with a pie and syrup.”

Where to find it: Maya’s Jams, Jeffersonville
Price: $7.99 for a 4-ounce jar
Description: “Maya’s Apricot Vanilla jam is a family favorite. This is the jam that Maya’s grandmother used to make for her as a little girl. The sweet apricots, freshly picked at their peak of ripeness in the Hudson Valley, are complemented perfectly with the delicate aroma of pure Madagascar vanilla. This whimsical jam is floral and sweet, but without all the sugar! Apricots are lovely in savory cooking as well, so it’s a must for barbecues and pork roasts, too.”
