People stop by More Good on Beacon’s Main Street for lots of reasons. The funky and appealing space beckons with wood-hued backgrounds, a few tables, a top-notch stereo system, and shelf upon shelf of delightful culinary finds. Traditionally, customers have come in for the now-famous hand-crafted soda syrups, large collection of bitters, and artisanal teas. But more and more, they’re stopping by to pick up a pinch or two of gourmet salt.
“People are looking for all types of new culinary experiences,” says owner Jason Schuler. “Salts like Pink Himalayan are all the rage, but people don’t want to invest in expensive bottles that they may use once a year and then have to throw out. Here they can buy by the ounce, which lets them experiment.” The debate rages regarding whether gourmet salts are really healthier than table salt (they do contain more minerals), but these finishing salts are certainly more fun — their crystal structure and residual moisture add unique flavor and texture (think “crunch”) to a wide variety of dishes.

Black Lava Salt
This revered Hawaiian salt is infused with activated charcoal, which allegedly assists the body in removing harmful impurities.
Red Alaea Salt
Containing more than 80 minerals, this popular Hawaiian salt gets its gorgeous bright color from red volcanic clay. Its mellow flavor makes it a natural to enhance soups and stews, but more people are using it as a topping for chocolate or ice cream.
Cyprus Flake Salt
Known for its distinctive and dazzling pyramid shape, this pungent Mediterranean salt “is the one that my customers are getting most excited about,” says Schuler. “People come back and report on the robust flavor and the texture — that crunch!” Use it to enhance a wide variety of fish dishes.
Sea Salt Smoked
To impress your friends, sprinkle a bit of this on the meat at your next backyard barbecue. The brand that Schuler carries is gathered off the coast of California and smoked over Pacific Red Alder wood for a deeply rich, distinctive flavor with no aftertaste. “People love this,” says Schuler. “They want to just come in and smell it; it’s amazing.”
Pink Himalayan Sea Salt
Originally formed from marine fossil deposits more than 250 million years ago, this hand-mined winner is considered to be the purest form of salt available. With both culinary and therapeutic powers (health benefits include eliminating toxins and increasing circulation), the salt can be added to your bath or your fish.
