Years ago, the term “hot dog” had a narrow definition, i.e. an unidentifiable blob you ate hesitantly at family parties. Today, they range from hearty chunks of tender, grilled sausage to deep-fried mounds of meat smothered in cheese. We’re celebrating that evolution on—when else?—the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council-decreed National Hot Dog Day. Unbeknownst to many, some of the country’s best are hidden right here in the Hudson Valley, and here’s a quartet of our favorite franks, as well as one Bavarian relative that—in the spirit of inclusivity—we couldn’t resist recommending.
Dress it up or down. Grab a jalapeno cheddar dog for as low as $2.75 or a gourmet Greek dog stuffed with grilled lamb apple and onion sausage, Tzatziki, cucumber, apple jam, feta cheese and scallion.
