3 Top-Notch Dutchess County Diners

With huge menus and “breakfast served all day” policies, diners are a traditional morning choice — and more or less offer the same fare. These three Dutchess County standouts are typical of diners around the Valley

Daily Planet, Lagrangeville

With its ’60s pop-culture decor, this popular eatery gives off a “blast from the past” vibe for baby boomers — but the menu is right up to the minute. Breakfast specials include several Tex-Mex offerings, like chorizo quesadillas and a Sante Fe wrap with eggs, avocado, and a house-made salsa. And if you’re serious about your morning caffeine, the Planet offers an extensive espresso bar with both hot and iced choices — as well as a selection of liqueur-laced coffees for late-night sipping. 845-452-0110; www.dailyplanetdiner.com

eveready diner

Eveready Diner, Hyde Park

Renowned for its 2007 appearance on the Food Network’s popular Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, this chrome-covered spot has a vintage diner feel. The Hyde Park clientele has been breakfasting here for more than 50 years on favorites like bananas Foster French toast (made with challah bread baked on the premises) and pancakes with strawberry whipped butter. And Valleyites in Rhinebeck and Brewster can now start their mornings at the Eveready locations opened in recent years in those towns. 845-229-8100; www.theevereadydiner.com

palace diner

Palace Diner, Poughkeepsie

A favorite late-night haunt for Marist College students, the Palace has been part of the Vanikiotis family’s diner empire (they also own Dutchess County’s Daily Planet, Table Talk, and Red Line diners) since 1981. The breakfast menu offers eggs served in more ways than we can count (including with steak, corned beek, and pastrami); buckwheat, oatmeal, and sweet potato pancakes — along with the traditional buttermilk — are all available; and muffins and breads are baked on the premises every day. 845-473-1576; www.thepalacediner.com
