Moms do so much for their kids every day — so this year, why not treat your mom to a special day in the city to show her how much you appreciate her? Here are two of our favorite NYC events that celebrate mothers this month.
Head to the New York Botanical Garden for a Mother’s Day weekend Garden Party. Spend an afternoon among vibrant flora and fauna while enjoying a casual picnic and tea. Entertainment is provided in the form of live music, and guests are invited to fly kites and play croquet. Be sure to stop by one of the many food trucks to sample some snacks. Beer and wine vendors are on hand, ready to serve. May 10-11; call or visit Web site for times and ticket information (718-817-8700; www.nybg.org).
Instead of a normal Mother’s Day brunch, why not make it a meal and a show? Nosh on a bountiful buffet brunch at B.B. King Blues Bar and Grill while the Harlem Gospel Choir takes the stage. The world-renowned group has performed for two popes and three presidents, sung with the likes of Diana Ross and Bono, and recorded with Keith Richards. For more than 20 years, the choir has been belting out contemporary gospel with a touch of jazz and blues; the group’s dynamic performances often have audiences clapping and dancing in the aisles (May 11 at 1 p.m. $44 in advance, $47 at the door; www.harlemgospelchoir.com).
