Saturday Special – Juneteenth Tea Cakes
June 18 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Free
On Saturday, June 18, we will be celebrating Juneteenth a day early at Senate House! Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people were officially freed under the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, two years after the Proclamation was made.
We will have tea cakes to pass out, a traditional pastry made on Juneteenth. Ingredients typically included molasses, lard, eggs, baking powder, and sometimes nutmeg or vanilla, depending on what was available. These were considered pantry ingredients, things that enslaved people would typically have in their pantry.
We will also have Juneteenth pamphlets on the history of the day available to pass out, on top of holding our regularly scheduled tours of Senate House. We hope to see you this weekend!
