Recent Paintings by Maria Pia Marrella
September 2 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Buster Levi Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition RECENT PAINTING by Maria Pia Marrella opening Sept 2 through Oct 2. A reception for the artist will be held Friday Sept 2nd from 5:00 to 8:00 pm The exhibition will be the 15th solo show for Ms. Marrella who is a member of the Buster Levi Gallery located at 121 Main STreet in Cold Spring New York.
Marrella started this series of paintings in the summer of 2021 and then after retiring from her teaching job in February 2022 had a renewed burst of creative focus where she produced the majority of the work for this show.
The paintings and works on wood panels are the artists response to the realities of uncertain times through personal imagery and form that is inventive by turns ominous, playful, and poetic. Familiar forms of houses various landscape water and sky juxtapose images and amorphous shapes in surprising compositions that keep the viewer in an engaged conversation.
Phenomena shift in cubist space where glimpses of forest fires, torrential rain pollution and floods juxtaposed with domicile scenes of still life, animals and gardens.
Observed in the larger works, are geometrically inspired paintings constructed on loose grids that call to mind some of the work of Paul Klee. The color is rich and varied as is her use of texture which is both patterned and tangible. In the small, 12 inch square paintings Marrella adds collage elements that are both distinctive (lamps and telescopes) into the compositions that reference a “search” for what? These paintings are not meant to provide answers; only questions that will provoke the viewers own curious interpretation of these visually complex compositions.
