“Edges of Tenderness” is a live performance that utilizes Shibari, or Japanese rope bondage, as its main technique. Masha and Margherita have been working together for over two years, integrating their personal journeys into their practice and performances. Shibari uses jute rope to constrict, suspend, and manipulate the body, in a dialogue between a more “passive ” participant and a more “active” one, the receiver of rope (Margherita) and the giver (Masha). This piece is about 70 minutes long and presents the entire process of tying, flying, and freeing the body, accompanied by a musical landscape. Below is a statement about the piece:
Tenderness is itself an edge, the description of both caring love and devotion, and sensitivity to pain. We move in the space contained by such ideas in the most embodied way possible, flowing through states of being that are heightened by their closeness to the edges, by their pushing of societal contracts and boundaries. These spaces require attention and care, they require clear communication and a listening that is more similar to meditation than it is to conversation, yet it’s a dialogue you witness, between falling inside and connecting outward, between care and suffering, between the subtle intensities we find at the edge, and the tenderness of being creatures of the earth, bound to fly.
