Celebrating Mingus’s 100th Birthday at The Rosendale Theatre

April 24 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

$20 – $25

(Rosendale, NY) The Music Film Series of The Rosendale Theatre Collective celebrates the late legendary jazz composer/bassist Charles Mingus on the weekend of his centennial – Sunday, April 24th.

The festivities begin at 3 pm with a screening of “Charles Mingus: Triumph of the Underdog” (GP17), a 1997 documentary film narrated by Mingus himself. Nine years in the making, this was the first and perhaps only comprehensive documentary about this jazz giant as bassist, bandleader, and composer showing the many faces and troubled heart of this musical genius. The film features an abundance of live clips of Mingus in performance.

A live performance by the Mingus tribute sextet “Hang ‘Em High” immediately follows the film. Directed by bassist Robert Kopec, “Hang ‘Em High” features Joe Vincent Tranchina – Piano, Don Devine – Drums, Jon Leonard – Brass, Eric Person – Sax. Wayne Tice – Reeds.

Radio personalities Penny Brody of WVKR FM “Mingus Moments” show and widow of the late great saxophonist Hugh Brodie, and Mike Jurkovic of All About Jazz and WIOX FM “New Jazz Excursions” will be our Masters of Ceremony.

Refreshments and sundries will be on sale. Co-Sponsors include Kitt Potter, Mike Jurkovic, Emily Monahan, Jay Kahn, Joyce Spratkin, Laurie Giardino, and Carrie Wykoff.

Tickets are $25 General and $20 for Rosendale Theatre Members. A sold-out house is expected. For reservations, tickets, and more information, go to: rosendaletheatre.org.

COVID policy: The Rosendale Theatre requires proof of vaccination for entry for patrons over five. Masks must be worn inside unless eating and drinking at your seat.

The Rosendale Theatre Collective operates the historic Rosendale Theatre as a vital and diverse cultural Hudson Valley non-profit. They use the power of film and live performance to entertain, educate and inspire connection.
