SallyeAnder has been making olive oil Castile soap since 1982, when the first bar was designed by founder Gary Austin to aid his son who had sensitive skin. Ideal for all skin types, each bar is crafted from essential oils and hypoallergenic, edible ingredients that are globally and locally sourced. “We use ingredients that benefit your body,” says CEO/President Sallie Austin Gonzales.
Community-Minded Fitness Studio
The Wheel House
When Poughkeepsie native Michelle Shah opened The Wheel House in July 2017, her intention was to create a boutique spin studio that was the opposite of the big-box studios. One where members could feel safe, welcomed, comforted, and encouraged. And that’s exactly what is going on over at Van Wagner Plaza — in addition to cycling, barre, and sculpt classes, that is. It’s not only about the community within the studio. The Wheel House also does Karma rides where 100% of the proceeds go to Hudson Valley organizations like The American Heart Association and The Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse.
Savor Beauty + Spa
Clean beauty is the name of the game at this serene Saugerties spa, which has sister locations in NYC. Indulge in organic K-beauty facials and treatments or shop the spa’s signature line of eco-friendly skincare treats, all of which are vegan and made without parabens and sulfates. Pick up the pumpkin seed serum or truffle face cream for a weeknight luxury at home.
Hidden Gem Day Spa
The Mirbeau name is well-known among spa resort aficionados (one is opening in Rhinebeck this fall) as being one of the best in that category, but did you know they also have a presence in Albany — at the Crossgates Mall? Spa Mirbeau is a 17,000 sq ft “day resort” featuring everything the brand is famous for, including spa treatments and wellness programs, plus there’s Le Bistro café, which serves local, organic food and has a world-class wine list. Actually, it sounds like exactly the kind of place you want at a mall.
One-Stop Healing Center
Hudson Valley Healing Center

Venture into the salt cave, which promotes respiratory and vascular health, with a whopping 14 tons of Himalayan salt embedded in the walls and floors. Test out a variety of wellness practices here with everything from yoga and reiki to chakra balancing and primal movement.

The Body Art Barn
Add a trapeze-like thrill to your moves in an aerial yoga class – it’s a combo of floor poses and other postures supported by a fabric sling hung at waist height. Or try a pole-dancing workout, traditional yoga, or barre (“ballet meets boot camp”) class. Owner Michelle Dawson also rents out the nifty space in a renovated barn for private events. She recently opened a second studio, focused on pole dancing, in Warwick.

Ray’s Custom Training
Some of their clients are literally getting back on their feet after rehab for hip or knee replacements; others seek overall fitness guidance, specialty personal training, or nutrition and weight-loss support. Owner Ray Gonsalves and his staff also work with athletes such as equestrians, golfers, and tennis players to help fine-tune their performance. The facility offers massage, pilates, and group workouts, too.
Salon and Day Spa (East of the Hudson River)
This friendly beauty spot caters to customers ranging from kids and families to bridal parties and other special-event groups. Sip a refreshing complimentary organic tea or Fair Trade coffee as their professional team offers haircutting, coloring, and highlights, plus an array of other spa and salon services including nail care, facials, and lash extensions (for ultra relaxation, try a moisturizing massage body wrap with essence of rosemary and peppermint).

C’est La Vie
From a quick mani/pedi to a serious day of beauty and wellness, C’est La Vie has the perfect suite of services. Treat yourself to a massage (including new lymphatic drainage massage), facial, or microblading; body treatments and waxing; makeup and hair styling for special occasions; or the just-right cut and style. New this year: craniosacral therapy, a light-touch manipulation that helps the body heal itself.
Hudson Valley native Janette Bower returned from a New York City beauty-industry career to open this cute apothecary-style shop and spa. All items are organic, vegan, and cruelty-free. The store sells her 58Flora line of small-batch beauty products made with flowers and natural ingredients – the Jasmine & Neroli Face and Body Floral mist is a favorite. They offer acupuncture, massage, facials, waxing, and hair care, too.
