New Vintage Shop

An overnight trip to Beacon in the summer of 2011 changed the entire course of Angela Hasting’s life. The stylist, who had been living in Manhattan with her longtime boyfriend, was completely enchanted with the town; within seven months the pair had uprooted everything and moved into a house in the little river city. But the opening of Vintage Beacon six months later, in September 2012, was the culmination of a long-held dream. “I’ve wanted a boutique for, literally, as long as I can remember; since I was a very little girl,” she says. Now, her shop, located in a tiny storefront near the trendy Roundhouse at Beacon Falls, oozes big-city charm — while offering Chanel at consignment store prices. Part of the fun of shopping here is that the beautiful, oh-so-fashionable Hastings is incredibly down to earth and acts almost like your very own personal shopper. “I hand-select each thing that goes in the store,” she says.
“I choose things based on what I really love, what I find to be special and beautiful.” Hastings says that she now has a group of regulars — both consignors and shoppers (it’s a 60/40 split) — as well as lots of clients from the city. And her Facebook page has even helped her snag clients in California and Montreal. “I could never have predicted that it would go as well as it has,” says Hastings about her first year in retail. “It’s been amazing.” 845-202-7172; www.vintagebeacon.com

Country Decor Home Store

Customers love browsing through this shop’s eclectic collection of furniture, gifts, linens, and housewares, all displayed in a distinctive 1800s Greek Revival building. There’s also a secondary shop in an old barn on the property. “We have a bit of everything, and we especially like to showcase local artisans,” says owner Meg Stratton, who adds that the “great location” just off the Taconic Parkway draws lots of travelers going to and from Connecticut, Vermont, the Berkshires, and Massachusetts. Stratton describes the store’s vibe as “not exactly ‘cozy country’ — it’s not where you’d go for collectibles; it’s more like ‘country-politan.’ ” 518-392-2211; www.facebook.com/classiccountryeastchatham

Native Plant Shop

Owner Pete Muroski launched this business in 1987, with an eye toward sharing his passion for plants and a commitment to environmentally conscious design. “It’s basically a common-sense approach to gardening: Using native plants that are indigenous to our region,” says Muroski, who oversees the company’s landscape design and maintenance services. Their construction portfolio includes stone walls and paths, nature-friendly water features, perennial gardens, and more. Native Landscapes also offers a full-service native-plant garden center to help local gardeners learn about and enjoy the beauty of our region’s flora. 845-855-7050; www.nativelandscaping.net

Beer Selection

Stocking more than 3,000 brews from around the globe, this warehouse-style shop located on Route 9 has long been a mecca for beer buffs near and far. The unique tag system, developed by owner Alan Daniels, breaks the selections down by hops and color. Shoppers are also enticed by a dozen different “beer of the month” clubs, weekly tastings, 12 beers on draft, and the ability to create a case by mixing and matching different brands. The extensive online shop allows you to browse brews 24 hours a day. Look for the giant new Mamaroneck store — it’s more than double the size of the original — to open its doors by mid-November. 845-462-5400; www.halftimebeverage.com
