Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Maybe it was because the holiday season was in full swing, or perhaps this was tougher than we thought. Either way, only a handful of readers knew the correct location of the “Gatehouse Gift,” last month’s “Where in the Hudson Valley” landmark. The imposing stone house, tower, and archway were erected in 1907 to honor the 50th wedding anniversary of Mohonk Mountain House cofounder Albert Smiley and his wife, Eliza. Even if you’ve spent time at this popular Valley resort, you might have missed catching sight of this unusual structure, which sits on the eastern edge of the property about one and one-half miles from New Paltz. (Our thanks to Mohonk archivist Joan LaChance for helping us nail down the gatehouse’s history.)

You have taken a beautiful fall picture of the gatehouse. My family has hiked this route, and I’ve often thought, ”Can you imagine taking a carriage ride to the Mountain House on a trail where every turn is like a page in a beautiful storybook?”

I pass this lookout tower as I go to my weekend house in Kerhonkson. I always wondered what its story was, and now I know. Just another reason why I enjoy reading your magazine: getting info on the Hudson Valley.
