Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Maybe it was because the holiday season was in full swing, or perhaps this was tougher than we thought. Either way, only a handful of readers knew the correct location of the “Gatehouse Gift,” last month’s “Where in the Hudson Valley” landmark. The imposing stone house, tower, and archway were erected in 1907 to honor the 50th wedding anniversary of Mohonk Mountain House cofounder Albert Smiley and his wife, Eliza. Even if you’ve spent time at this popular Valley resort, you might have missed catching sight of this unusual structure, which sits on the eastern edge of the property about one and one-half miles from New Paltz. (Our thanks to Mohonk archivist Joan LaChance for helping us nail down the gatehouse’s history.)

January’s winner, Valdelicio Silva of Highland,  receives a gift certificate to a local eatery. To try your luck at this month’s quiz, turn to page 112.

Too bad it’s a private residence. I’d love to see what the interior is like!

You have taken a beautiful fall picture of the gatehouse. My family has hiked this route, and I’ve often thought, ”Can you imagine taking a carriage ride to the Mountain House on a trail where every turn is like a page in a beautiful storybook?”

Thanks for the information on that gorgeous gatehouse, I’ve always wanted to know more about it.

The former gatehouse to Mohonk Mountain House is a favorite subject that I have painted many times.

I pass this lookout tower as I go to my weekend house in Kerhonkson. I always wondered what its story was, and now I know. Just another reason why I enjoy reading your magazine: getting info on the Hudson Valley.

Corrections

In the article “Movin’ and Groovin’ ” (January), Eileen Bastien is incorrectly listed as teaching Zumba classes at the YMCA of Orange County. The classes take place at the Union Avenue Y in New Windsor (845-561-4700).

In our December feature “Mountain Madness,” the full-day adult weekend lift-ticket price at Windham Mountain is incorrect. The ticket price is $61.
