Elvis in the Valley

A handful of readers correctly identified the location of the Elvis Dinner Theatre sign pictured in our April issue (see below for some of the responses). The King (in the guise of impersonator Joe Eigo) appears live at Lange’s Groveside Resort in the town of Acra, Greene County. Several fans guessed that Eigo/Elvis was a regular at the Big E Entertainment Complex and Restaurant in nearby Cairo. Close, but no cigar — Eigo has indeed performed at the Big E, but not in the past two years.

Congratulations to Adrianne Turrell, who was the first person to send us the correct answer. She wins a gift certificate to the Artist’s Palate restaurant in Poughkeepsie. (And we just know she’ll be wearing her blue suede shoes when she redeems it.) For this month’s Valley question, turn to page 116.

Elvis performs every Saturday night on Route 23 in Greene County. I’ve noticed this while driving to Ski Windham, and have not had the time or courage to check it out. Maybe now I will.

The Elvis Dinner Theatre Show is wonderful and well worth seeing for fans of Elvis. Since returning to my beautiful childhood town of Windham seven years ago, I find your magazine both informative and enjoyable. Thank you.

I think the Elvis impersonator you’re talking about appears at Lange’s Groveside Resort in Greene County. P.S. Love your magazine; that’s why I recently bought a subscription.

I believe that I have the answer to your “Elvis sighting” question: it’s Cairo/Acra. Joe Eigo used to play at Nick’s Restaurant before he played at the present establishment.

I’m not interested in the contest, but if you can please let me know where the Elvis dinner show is held I’d greatly appreciate it. I would love to take my kids there.

Pumped-up pups

Thank you for your article on the Guiding Eyes for the Blind Canine Development Center (For Starters, April).  I want to correct one inconsistency. The puppies do not have to be walked three miles each day. Only the dogs in the brood/stud program are exercised that much; the puppies just get about 20 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Since finding puppy raisers is so critical to our mission, I’m hoping folks will not be discouraged by the three-mile walk.

Corrections

In our chart on private schools (March), the Special Programs information on the Millbrook School was inaccurate. The school offers independent study and study abroad programs, and a Culminating Experience for Seniors requirement. Their AZA-accredited Trevor Zoo offers unique opportunities in the sciences, and all students participate in the school’s on-campus community service program. Both the arts and athletics areas have state-of the-art facilities constructed within the last 10 years.

Warwick Garden’s Jennifer Wardell (Gardening 101, April) clarifies her advice for first-time gardeners: “I would direct a brown-thumb gardener towards Dianthus and Rudbeckia. Both can be grown in full sun or part shade, both offer a long season of color with repeat blooming if deadheaded.” (That’s plucking off the dead blossoms to keep the plant from going to seed.) Also, a full-sun garden site is suggested for vegetables or herbs, not necessarily for all gardens (a detail we mistakenly edited out of question one).

The April Small Bites page mentions restaurateur Rifo Murtovic. Mr. Murtovic has had stints managing several Valley eateries — including the popular Sapore Steakhouse (Fishkill) and Cena 2000 (Newburgh) — but has not been owner of either of these. That distinction belongs to Sali Hadzi (who also owns Il Cenàcolo and Café Pitti, both in Newburgh.)
