Meet Your Match

 

 

I met my husband in December of 1999, right before the famous millennium New Year’s Eve (you know, the one where the world was supposed to come to a screeching halt). It was a Sunday, and I had spent most of the afternoon at a very pleasant Christmas party in Brooklyn, thrown by a former colleague of mine whom I hadn’t seen in several months. Just as I was getting my things together to head home, my future husband walked through the door. Here, I’m supposed to announce that in that very moment I heard bells ringing and angels singing, and that instantly “I just knew” he was “the one.” But none of that happened, not at all.

 

What did happen was that I heard him say something kind of irreverent to a friend of mine, and soon, I joined in their conversation. I didn’t think of him as dating material; he wasn’t my type (whatever that was), but he was amusing. We ended up chatting for a while and eventually, I turned the conversation to skiing. Then I did something very uncharacteristic for a shy, young thing like me. As I was leaving, I handed him my phone number and said, “If you ever want to get a group of people together to go skiing, give me a call.” I assumed that was the end of it. But he called the next day; the rest, as they say, is history.

 

But before meeting my spouse, I had experienced my fair share of dating trials and tribulations (don’t worry, I’ll spare you the details). I remember those days well, which is why I’m so impressed with the group of 13 fabulous bachelors and bachelorettes profiled in our Single in the Valley article (page 34). These fine folks weren’t afraid to put themselves out there — and they shouldn’t be, because each of them has something unique and wonderful to offer. We brought several of them together for a photo shoot at Shadows on the Hudson, and are happy to announce that one of our bachelorettes scored two phone numbers that very night. But whether or not anything romantic comes of it, these singles still had a great time, met new friends, and deserve kudos for having the courage to participate. We hope you’ll join us (and them) on July 31 when all 13 super singles will be the guests of honor at Hudson Valley’s Mix and Mingle Singles Party, which will also be held at Shadows on the Hudson in Poughkeepsie. Come on down and meet them; even if you’re attached, it will be a fun, warm-weather party at a hip hot spot overlooking the Hudson River. And that’s a great way to spend a summer evening, whether you’re searching for your soulmate or simply some good conversation.
