Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Standing on the grounds of Washington’s Newburgh headquarters is the subject of last month’s puzzle: the nation’s only monument commemorating the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. In 1883, Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln, son of our famous 16th president, ordered its construction to memorialize the Treaty of Paris, which was signed 100 years prior and established a relative peace with the British. John Hemingway Duncan, who created Grant’s Tomb in NYC, designed the structure with notable sculptor William Randolph O’Donovan. Over the years, it suffered considerable damage, so in November, the Palisades Park Conservancy launched a campaign for its restoration. Hats off to Cassandra Hansen of New Paltz for being the first to locate this limestone landmark. For this month’s quiz, click here to see if you know the whereabouts of an ivy-covered timekeeper.

This building is named the Tower of Victory. It stands on the property where General George Washington created the “Badge of Military Merit,” or as we know it, the Purple Heart medal.

We often walk past this while on our lunch break. What a beautiful view of the Hudson River.

We were there last year during the President’s Day celebration. It was a fabulous day, with Revolutionary War reenactors, many demonstrations, drills, and speeches. We learned so much, and even got to sing “Happy Birthday” to George and have cake.

Missing Motorcycles

I was happy to see this region being touted as a motorcycle touring destination in the May issue. The four routes — and many more — offer a cornucopia of wonderful things to see and people to meet along the way. I was disappointed, however, that even though one of the routes noted in the article began in Newburgh, not a single mention was made of the Motorcyclepedia Museum in that very same city. Wholly aside from being a motorcyclist’s destination in and of itself, it is a repository of Hudson Valley — and American — motorcycling culture that just should not be missed. I would recommend that all Hudson Valley residents — even if they don’t ride a motorcycle — make their way to this unique museum. Even better: All the roads leading to and from it are the beginnings of a great trip!

Editor’s note: In fact, Newburgh’s Motorcyclepedia Museum is one of five destinations featured in this month’s “Father’s Day Frolics” article. Click here to see it.

As a longtime resident of Pleasant Valley, I was surprised see Elaine’s Tap & Table included as a local dining choice (“Eight Hot Hometowns,” April). Elaine’s is located a mile from the town line, in what is considered Rochdale.
