Rhinebeck Savings Bank Banks on Kindness

A local bank gives back to the community

The Rhinebeck Savings Bank could have thrown a swank gala to celebrate its 150th anniversary this year; after all, being in business that long is quite a feat. Instead, the long-lasting financial institution, with about a dozen branches in Dutchess and Ulster counties, opted to celebrate this milestone in a decidedly down-to-earth way. Each month, the bank’s staff performs a random act of kindness. So far, they’ve brought 150 bouquets of anemones to local nursing homes; handed out 150 grocery store gift cards through a food pantry program; and teamed up with Barnes & Noble to donate — you guessed it — 150 children’s books to a local youth development program. “It just seemed natural to focus our 150th anniversary observance on making our community a better place, rather than patting ourselves on the back,” says Michael J. Quinn, president and CEO. Keeps your eyes open for more goodwill gestures. Maybe all those big banks that keep failing should take note: show your community that you care, and maybe you’ll survive for 150 years, too.
