Where in the Hudson Valley: Hometown Heroes

Can you locate this monument, still standing proudly 112 years later?

Officially known as the 124th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, these soldiers fought in some of the most important battles of the Civil War. They witnessed Gen. Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox before returning home as heroes. Author Stephen Crane grew up in the Hudson Valley amongst surviving members of the 124th, and his classic novel The Red Badge of Courage is widely believed to be inspired by their accounts. The surviving members gathered on Main Street in 1907 for the dedication of a monument to their honor. Where in the Valley is this monument, still standing proudly 112 years later?
