Tuxedo Park Interior Designer to Participate in Prestigious Showcase

Susan Niblo will be a designer for the Mansion in May Designer Showhouse that raises funds for the Morristown Medical Center.

Tuxedo Park-based interior designer Susan M. Niblo has been chosen to participate in the Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens in Morris Township, New Jersey, one of the premier showhouses in the country. The event will be hosted by volunteers in conjunction with the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center to create a beautiful showcase that will raise funds to help establish the hospital’s new Center for Nursing Innovation and Research.

Niblo is one of 46 designers chosen for the event by the Designer Showhouse Committee. “To be chosen out of the several hundred applications they received — a particularly high number this year — was such a privilege.  I am so excited to fulfill my design vision for the space,” Niblo said.

Out of all the rooms in the mansion, Niblo chose “The Ante Room” by the entrance on the first floor of the more than 20,000-square-foot Renaissance Revival structure, envisioning an Art Deco-inspired lounge for the imaginary visitors to the mansion in its heyday. “I chose the space because it was more or less a blank canvas with none of the period details that many of the other rooms had. I could really put my talents and expertise to work and express all the glory of the Art Deco era while also doing most of the work in the room myself,” said Niblo.

The design of the “The Ante Room” will include cove lighting, wall color and fabrics that cause sharp contrast, black-and-white checked floor tiles and faux peacocks to add drama. “Opulence is key; crystal, mirrors and fine finishes. The main focal point is the portrait of a woman, which is something I copied from the famous Art Deco artist Tamara de Lempicka, with a few changes,” said Niblo. Niblo has already begun work on the room, which is slated to be open to the public on May 1.

Niblo was inspired at a young age to be an interior designer by her grandfather, George E. Minton, who was the lead architect for the City of New York Department of Marine and Aviation. “He was an incredible mentor, and his many architectural achievements include the 1962 World’s Fair, LaGuardia and JFK Airports; Pier 42 in Manhattan and all of the Gimbels department stores,” said Niblo.

Typically held every two years, the event is toured by over 33,000 people. The Mansion in May will be open the entire month of May, and will offer both public and private tours. Advanced tickets are currently available online and will be available at select local retail outlets beginning April 1. For more information, visit http://www.mansioninmay.org.
