The Blushery

Beacon

You might have passed by the Blushery on Beacon’s Main Street. From the crowd inside sipping Pinot, looking at art on the walls, and lounging on comfy sofas, you might think that it’s a gallery or perhaps a wine bar. And even though owner Stephanie Jones’s abstract paintings are on display, this popular pit stop — just across the street from Beacon’s iconic flashing dummy light — is actually a beauty bar. Customers flock here to try on and purchase makeup; find handmade and vegan skin care products; and even get a facial, wax, or brow treatment.

Duck your head in and take a look around. There’s a tempting spread of lipstick, mascara, and all kinds of pretty powders by Hudson-based FACE Stockholm, Jones’s go-to brand. A makeup maven and certified aesthetician to boot, she will help you find the exact palette that suits you. There are also hand-picked skincare products and a curated collection of scented candles for sale.

Brides and their maids head here to get their makeup done (the Roundhouse, a popular wedding venue, is right across the street), but anyone can book an appointment for a makeover. “Some people come in and say ‘just do my eyes,’ ” says Jones, who is happy to oblige, creating her signature “Wing” with a clean little flick of eyeliner. “It’s not Cleopatra. It’s a very natural look,” she says. If you want glam, she can do that, too. Workshops to teach you how to do it yourself are in the offing.

Jones discovered her cosmetology talents as a tween during sleepover parties, and friends have been asking her to do their makeup for proms, weddings, and other special occasions ever since.

After she returned to Beacon from Philadelphia with a degree in elementary education (and a boyfriend who would become her husband), she tried teaching but realized that her heart was really in the beauty biz. “It was always on my mind,” she says. “From the time I was a kid I wanted to be a makeup artist.” Following her dream, she earned her New York State aesthetics license; worked for a dermatologist for seven years as well as for cosmetics laser centers; took makeup classes in New York City; and did friends’ wedding makeup pro bono. Eventually, Jones set up shop doing facials in a local gym, then expanded to a space in Poughkeepsie over a clothing boutique. Still, she hankered for more: “I always knew I wanted to have a storefront.”

Celebrating its one-year anniversary on Mother’s Day, the Blushery is a clean, contemporary space with white surfaces punctuated by exposed brick and groovy Marie Antoinette wallpaper. The back area has a cozy treatment room with a facial bed where Jones works her magic. Microdermabrasion and very gentle chemical peels that correct fine lines are popular here. You can also get a spray tan for summer, and save yourself from future wrinkles. “People come here to freshen up, get a nice glow, and look a little brighter,” says Jones. Frequently she gives facials to acne patients who are already under the care of a dermatologist.

Whenever the shop is open, there is a constant stream of well-wishers stopping by; whether the mother of a childhood friend or an elementary school buddy, many of them have known Jones forever. “When I look out the window and see the mountains — and the dummy light — I really do feel like I’m back home.”
