Drive-In Movie Theaters in the Hudson Valley, Upstate NY

See the latest flicks the old-fashioned way at these Hudson Valley drive-in movie theaters

With movie ticket prices rising through the roof, who wouldn’t want to see two movies for under $10? Fortunately, there are still quite a few drive-in theaters around the Valley. Roll up with your kids or your date and see the latest flick the old-fashioned way.

Open weekends from April to June and seven days a week from June until August, the Hollywood Drive-In is entering its 60th season. Four hundred cars worth of moviegoers munch on all manner of goodies (from pizza and cotton candy to new flavored French fries) while catching a double feature at each showing. Just like in days gone by, guests can sit on lawn chairs and toss a Frisbee around before the start of the show. Despite the feeling of nostalgia, the theater is moving firmly into the electronic age: this season marks the introduction of digital projection. $8, $4 children. The Hyde Park Drive-In, located across from the FDR Museum and Library, opened in 1949 and is still going strong. Families can buy discounted ticket books (10 tickets for $60) and see a double feature every night of the summer. The theater sits on 12 acres and has room for 670 cars. Gates open one hour before the show, allowing for plenty of time to socialize with the friends you brought — including your dog. $8, $4 ages 5-11, under 5 free. The Overlook Drive-In can accommodate up to 750 cars. Its most unique feature? The screen itself. It’s six stories high and the largest in the tristate area. Open rain or shine seven days a week, Overlook broadcasts sound on FM 87.9 and accepts debit and credit cards at the always-stocked concession stand. If you’re not afraid of staying out late on Monday nights, take advantage of the $5 bargain admission. $8, $4 ages 5-11, under 5 free. Poughkeepsie. 845-452-3445; www.overlookdrivein.com

One of the state’s largest — with four big-screens and room for 600 vehicles — the Hi-Way Drive-In has been in continuous operation since the Klein brothers built it in 1951. Another canine-friendly establishment, the theater offers double features all week during the summer, as well as on spring and autumn weekends. Still proudly welcoming guests at the entrance is the original neon marquee. $8, $3 ages 3-11, under 3 free. Coxsackie. 518-731-8672; www.hiwaydrivein.com

The Fair Oaks Drive-In operated as a single-screen theater until 1981, when it briefly shut down. Revamped and restored in 1991, it now features two screens and welcomes up to 800 cars. Tune in to FM 88.1 for screen one and FM 89.5 for screen two, and cash in on Thursday reduced admission. $7, $4 ages 5-11, under 5 free. Middletown. 845-361-5774; www.thefairoaksdrivein.com

The first of the Valley drive-ins to open this season (on March 9), the Warwick Drive-In (shown in photo) sits on 11 acres and shows first-run films on three different screens. If you find yourself loving a particular home-cooked treat at the snack bar, power up that smartphone and Tweet about it; free Wi-Fi is available, blending the modern with the 1950s atmosphere. $8, $5 seniors & children 4-11, under 4 free.
