Dining Delights: Choosing the Valley’s Best New Eateries of 2016

A word from Hudson Valley Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Olivia J. Abel

I recently read an online article that declared that 58 percent of Americans eat out at least once a week. As the parent of a six-year-old, I don’t dine out quite as frequently as I did in my pre-mommy days, but when I do have the opportunity to visit a top-notch restaurant I truly savor the experience (not to mention the peace and quiet). When I left New York City a decade ago to move north, one of the things I feared I would miss the most about big-city life was the dining scene. But as it turns out, I had absolutely no reason to worry: the Hudson Valley restaurant scene remains hotter than ever.

Yes, for many years now, a cadre of superstar chefs have bid bye-bye to Brooklyn or Manhattan and decided to set up shop in our region. In addition, the Culinary Institute of America, one of the world’s premier culinary colleges, continues to churn out world-class chefs who see the potential in all the natural beauty and farm-fresh ingredients that can be found here. The results of all this kitchen activity have been simply delicious.

In this month’s cover story, which begins here, we pick our nine favorite new restaurants. From a small-plate paradise in Goshen to a seafood sensation on the Newburgh waterfront (check out that wall of wine) to a trendy tapas joint up in Troy, we believe that these special spots are all worth a visit — or three. One of these restaurants, Kitchen Sink Food & Drink, is just blocks away from my home in über-hip Beacon. While I sheepishly admit that I haven’t had the pleasure of dining there — yet — I have always loved the cozy space and delightful backyard. I can’t wait to check it out. And as far as the other eight eateries? I’m getting out my calendar and making some plans; I suggest you do the same.

Happy eats.
