Fall Events in the Hudson Valley

Make the most of the cool weather at a bonfire and fall festivals or stay indoors for storytelling and a morning show

Stories of History
Oct 1:
The Art of Storytelling: Family Tours of Olana
History is about as far from boring as you can get at Olana. Professional storyteller Tom Lee leads tours through Frederic Edwin Church’s ornate house. The yarn spinner — who works in museums across the nation including the Metropolitan Museum of Art — interacts with many of the artifacts and gives a detailed (and lively) account of the items’ pasts. His tales engage children and show them how museum collections are not just dusty things on shelves, but living bits of history. Preregistration required.

10 a.m.-noon, free admission. Olana State Historic Site, 5720 Rte 9G, Hudson, 518.828.0135

Music and Marshmallows
Oct 9: Family Bonfire Night

Nothing beats warming up by a blazing fire. Dancing (not too close to the flames) is encouraged and live music is provided by the country/rockabilly band Tenbrooks Molly. If the clouds permit, Boscobel’s museum educator Lisa DiMarzo leads groups in stargazing. But the fan favorite by far is the ample opportunity for roasting s’mores. While supplies are provided, it might be a good idea to come with some of your own goodies packed, as these hot commodities tend to run out.

6-9 p.m., $15, $3 ages 2-10, under 2 free, rain date Oct 16. Boscobel House and Gardens, 1601 Rte 9d, Garrison, 845.265.3638

A Kid-friendly Horseman
Oct 29: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Every Valley kid should know the story of the Headless Horseman, and what better way to acquaint them with the tale than with a local theater group’s performance of it? Based on the short story by Washington Irving, the tale follows Ichabod Crane, his rivalry with the mischievous Brom Bones, and his encounter with the Headless Horseman. This fun adaption draws many laughs and expects the audience.

11 a.m., $9, $7 children. The Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck, 661 Rte 308, Rhinebeck, 845.876.3080

See website for tickets and times. Check out our Facebook page for your chance to win tickets to The Blaze.

Awesome Autumn
Oct 16: Fall Festival

Have you ever had the opportunity to build your own scarecrow, or did you just purchase one at Hobby Lobby? This full day of fall activities includes a scarecrow-making workshop as well as myriad other activities. Teens and adults can improve pumpkin-carving skills; younger participants can still have fun (without the sharp objects) by painting the pumpkins in in a spooky design. Also not to be missed are cider-making demonstrations, hayrides, and tricky scavenger hunts.
