Marvelous Marionettes

Jan 14: Fourth Annual Puppet Festival Back by popular demand, this yearly celebration of all things puppets never fails to delight children. This year’s featured group is Arm of the Sea Theater, which was founded in 1982 by local performers Marlena Marallo and Patrick Wadden and is famous for its low-tech visual theater. The show — called City That Drinks the Mountain Sky — educates children via the use of puppets on how the aqueduct system of New York City works and transports water from the Catskills to the Big Apple. Following the performance, kids have the opportunity to build their own puppets and put on their own puppet shows. A favorite tradition, milk and cookies are available after the show 11 a.m. $15.

Rock N’ Roll

Jan 14: Brady Rymer and the Little Band that Could It might be surprising to learn that a musician who has shared the stage with the likes of Bob Dylan, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, and Dave Matthews now produces children’s music. But Rymer does, and does it well. His interest in the genre began to grow to match his expanding family, and over the years, he’s assembled a rad band that appeals to children — and parents — of all ages. He now has seven albums under his belt, two of which have snagged Grammy nominations, and it’s been noted that his music “might just be the best” by NPR’s All Things Considered. 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. $15.

A Musical Adventure

Jan 21: “Into the Woods” Annual January Family Concert Having historically drawn the largest crowds to the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra’s concerts, the group is delighted to present this family showcase once again. The repertoire is selected and designed to “appeal to the child in us all,” making it appropriate for both kids and adults. This year, the symphony’s new conductor, Russell Ger, has created a multimedia fairy tale experience, in which the princess Rapunzel adventures into the forest while accompanied by the music of Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi — and very fittingly ending with Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. 3 p.m. $30 reserved, $25 general, $20 seniors, free for students.
