Where in the Hudson Valley Contest: “Alien Hangout” Diner

This eatery’s location is known for welcoming visitors from far, far away

The menu of stuffed grape leaves, hefty cheeseburgers, and other comfort foods suggests that this joint is just like any of the region’s myriad diners. While the brightly decorated booths do impart that always-coveted nostalgic backdrop, it’s the diner’s location that instills a distinctly absurd aura.

A popular spot since it opened in 2001, this eatery (a portion of its logo is shown above) can be found in a charming — but infamous — hamlet renowned as the hotbed of extraterrestrial activity on the East Coast. The tales of purported UFO sightings and alien abductions are plentiful; for the past five years, in fact, residents have held an annual fair celebrating the otherworldly visitors, which features a parade, informative lectures, and a visit by storm troopers from Star Wars.

Amid the reports of unexplained bright lights illuminating the woods, it is this no-frills restaurant that has served as the epicenter for eager sky-watchers. Over endless cups of coffee, locals and travelers from throughout the world sit and swap stories of the mysterious spaceships they’ve glimpsed, and plot future (hopefully fruitful) stakeouts.
