Wedding On Air: Walkway Over the Hudson Hosts Its First Wedding

This Valley couple took their love to new heights

Megan and Scott Case don’t tell your average love story: They lived just down the road from each other in Pleasant Valley, but it wasn’t until their profiles crossed on www.HudsonValleyCupid.com that they finally met. “We clicked right away,” says Scott, and he proposed — in front of 1,000 strangers — on a cruise to Belize last February. Doing things on the fly just came naturally.

That philosophy caught up with them last summer on the Mid-Hudson Bridge while trying to decide where they’d tie the knot.

As Scott recalls, “I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be incredible to get married on that Walkway?’ Meg wasn’t 100 percent into it — she’s afraid of heights.” Still, the bridge certainly fit the bill. “We had two requirements: it had to be outside, and somewhere along the Hudson River,” he says. And with the Walkway’s grand opening scheduled for October, their sky-high idea seemed more reachable each day.

The pair called Walkway Chairman Fred Schaeffer, who set them up with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Since construction prevented visitors from accessing the bridge, the Cases had to wait until the Walking on Air opening-day parade — a week before their October 10 wedding date — to see if they liked the location. “It was such a gamble,” Scott admits, “but we didn’t think for a moment that it wouldn’t work. Just the fact that it’s unique — and nobody’s ever done it before — was enough for us.”

Their wedding was a breeze, despite some drizzle early in the day. The groomsmen wore different-colored Converse sneakers, and the bride and her attendants carried daisy bouquets — Meg’s favorite flower — on a packed bridge. “We always joke around that we had a couple of thousand extra guests,” Scott laughs. Despite the crowd, the newlyweds agree it was a perfect day — and a unique one to boot. “A friend of Meg’s came up to us and said, ‘You know what, guys? You’re now a trivia question!’”
