Hogan’s Family Diner, Stony Point

Overview: Saturday evenings see the parking lot overflowing with well-maintained Buicks and Cadillacs. Their owners have made their way inside to scan the menu as many of them have for decades. Hogan’s has a family atmosphere, primed by eons of shared highs and lows. You may hear about the time Elizabeth Taylor was in town filming Butterfield 8 — the diner appears — or about the decline of the area’s brick industry; the diner has been one constant through it all.

The Menu: While it seems to fit the modern diner pedigree — high volume and big plastic menus — it is easily outclassing the others. Here the specials are what shine, but if you do order from the regular menu, choose one of the generously portioned omelets with an oversized English muffin, the chicken cordon blue wrap for lunch or the lamb loin chops for dinner.

Standout Specials: Gus, a manager, says Wednesdays are especially popular, with phones lighting up to make sure the pot pie and lamb shank aren’t sold out.

Regulars Recommend: The meatloaf, according to Michael Nemeth (30+ year customer)

Notable Features: Customers are accustomed to placing to-go orders in advance to cope with the at-times long lines. Call ahead for the specials, and order your family dinner to stay or to go. If you stay, don’t forget to grab a homemade oatmeal cookie on your way out; it’s on the house.
