Seasonal Peach Pies Prove Far from the Pits

We’re running, not walking, to Pie Lady & Son for a taste of their scrumptious seasonal peach pies

A family affair never tasted so good. Generational Nyack favorite Pie Lady & Son has just announced the return of their seasonal all-butter crust peach pies, and let us tell you up front: The Sistine Chapel has nothing on these babies.

A treasured local staple since 1996, one has to wonder: What’s their secret to churning out such perfectly moist, crumbly piles of pastry goodness? The answer is simple; it all goes back topie-making matriarch Deborah Tyler, the lady half of this aforementioned duo, who was in business for roughly six years before making the difficult decision to close her doors, said son and shop co-owner Wil Tyler. Wil, a Nyack native, was heartily inspired by his mother’s success and the effect of her pies on the community. “Ever since she closed up, people have been talking about it,” he says. “It was still something that there was a longing for in the area.”

Years later, Wil became interested in owning his own business, and it was this continued yearning that prompted him to forge ahead with the shop’s revival. Or as he puts it, “I always thought it was sad that it didn’t reach its full potential the first time around, and I thought it was worth another shot.”

Although thrilled to resurrect a former dream, Tyler’s disappointment after closing her doors years prior left her wary about jumping back into the baking game. Yet Tyler couldn’t pass up on the opportunity, telling her son, “If you have energy to take on all that it takes, I’ll help you as much as I can.”

Now six years in, Wil runs things on the business end while Deborah focuses on crafting her traditional fruit-filled pies for eager buyers.

Still, the mother/son team has learned that running a small business isn’t always peachy keen. A harsh freeze followed early warm weather this February, causing local farms to lose a large portion of their crop.

After calling several farms, they managed to strike gold with Concklin Orchards in Pomona. And although they lost a third of their crop this year, Wil contends that such loss is could have been worse considering the circumstances. Besides, “We only do pies with fresh peaches, so we’re at the mercy of the weather a little bit,” he adds. PL&S just received their first shipment from the orchard last week with another one coming in shortly.

Offerings this season will include “classic peach,” “raspberry peach,” and “peach walnut crumb,” with the company’s signature all-butter pie crust. Due to high demand, peach pie varieties tend to sell out daily, so we recommend you call ahead or place an order in advance. They’re expecting a solid three weeks of peach picking and availability, so run over and grab one (or all three) while you still can.
