8 Hot Hometowns: Best Places to Live in the Hudson Valley in 2013

With so many unique municipalities in our region, it’s no easy task to narrow down our list of top towns. Each of these eight burgs offers a sense of history, a bustling downtown area, and exceptional amenities for residents and visitors alike

There are dozens of communities in the Hudson Valley that people are proud to call home. From urban lofts in our revitalized cities to renovated farmhouses in rural outposts, there really is something for everyone in this beautiful region. (You know, the one that National Geographic Traveler called one of the world’s must-see places for 2013.)

When selecting a hometown, people want to know what recreational options they will find; where they can eat, what the schools are like, how long their commute will be — and the list goes on and on. And often they also want to know something less concrete; they are interested in the particular flavor of a town, that certain je ne sais quoi that makes them say, “I could put roots down here.”

Of course, everybody also wants to know what is going on with the real-estate market. Is now a good time to buy? Will my present house ever sell? We turned to realtor extraordinaire Dianne Minogue of Houlihan Lawrence for some answers. “Pricing right now has leveled off,” says Minogue. “We’ve actually started to see multiple offers in certain situations which we haven’t seen in a while. It’s a great time to buy. It’s so rare that you have low prices and such historically low interest rates. The combination is making the market very busy right now, particularly in the under $300,000 range.”

More specifically? “Southern Dutchess is the most popular area right now,” Minogue says. “Beacon, Wappingers Falls, Fishkill, East Fishkill. We have so many people who commute to points south that it’s been a hot area. But we’re seeing increased activity across the board.”
