Wedding Flowers: Choosing the Best Bouquets for a Fall Wedding

What kinds of flowers are in season this autumn?

Fall in the Hudson Valley is a popular season for weddings and it’s no wonder why: The fall colors here are amazing and, especially with outdoor weddings, create a background that only Mother Nature can provide.

A Hudson Valley bride asks: “I’ve always dreamed of having a fall wedding. I love flowers, so I want lots of them at my wedding — but I’m also on a tight budget. Can you tell me what flowers are in season (and affordable)?”

The Wedding Guru says: You’re on the right track: One way to stay in budget is to select flowers that are in season. (In that way you don’t have to import them from out of the country.) Some of my favorite fall flowers include gerbera daisies, sunflowers, roses, calla lilies, cymbidium orchids, hydrangea, dahlias, celosia, alstromeria, chrysanthemums, yarrow, and leucadendron. They can be paired with fall foliage and/or berries.

Your florist can help you with the selection process. He or she will explain which flowers hold up best for an outdoor wedding and which work best in a warmer environment. Just one reminder: When you meet with your florist, make sure you mention your budget parameters!
