Sustainable Wedding: Dress Rentals and Eco-Friendly Bridesmaid Dress Ideas
The bride’s gown may be white, but her wedding’s all green: Here are some ideas for making the rest of your wedding attire as eco-friendly as possible
Ireceived many emails from last week’s post about eco-friendly wedding gowns; here’s one that complements my previous advice.
A Hudson Valley bride asks: “Thanks for the information on eco-friendly gowns. (I’m borrowing mine from a close friend.) However, I’m stuck regarding eco-friendly attire for the other members of the wedding party. Got any ideas?”
The Wedding Guru answers: Why not take a hint from your groom and his groomsmen? Renting (“reusing”) saves time and money, and mos certainly ollows eco-friendly guidelines.
Many shops allow bridesmaid gown rentals. Because most dresses are worn only once, renting is a pretty green alternative. If renting isn’t your cup of tea, that’s fine — simply choose dresses and accessories that are made from natural materials.
Another option: allow your bridesmaids to pick any dress in a color of your choosing. This way, they can wear something they already own, as well as wear pre-owned dresses at consignment stores or through online auction sites. If you go this route, advise your attendants to look for 100% organic materials; reuse fabrics, belts, and embellishments; and wear items constructed by fair trade labor.
