Wedding Gifts: Ordering from a Bridal Registry (and What to Do If the Gift is Lost in the Mail)

A local bride is told her wedding gift is in the mail — but she never receives it. What’s the best way to ask her guest about it?

Bridal registries have made it easy to select a gift that you know the couple will enjoy. Receiving wedding gifts is one of the very pleasant parts of getting married. Almost every couple can fondly remember the time when the party was over and they sat together, perhaps with very close friends or family, and opened their gifts. Sometimes, however, the process goes awry…

Dear Wedding Guru: “While speaking to a family member (who was invited to my wedding), she mentioned that she’d sent me a gift. I waited two weeks, but no gift arrived. I feel really uncomfortable about this. What should I do?”

The Wedding Guru says: You’re in an awkward position, but in this case, there is no easy way to approach the problem. Tell the person in question that you’re concerned that their gift has not arrived. If you receive confirmation that it was mailed, then (politely) ask if they could track the gift with whatever conveyance they chose to inquire about delivery. Explain that you are sorry for any inconvenience and ask to be called with the results.
