Wedding Traditions: Candles, Pillars, Flower Vases May Be Used Instead of a Wedding Arch

Our bride’s husband-to-be is too tall for a traditional wedding arch. Check out the Wedding Guru’s suggestions to replace this tradition

The concept of the wedding arch beneath which the bridal couple stands for their ceremony is to create a “separate space” for the bridal couples. That space can include any item that will encircle them, be above or beside each of them.

Dear Wedding Guru: “This is my second marriage, but first wedding. My dilemma is that my fiancé is very tall (6’ 5”). We’d like to have a wedding arch, but we don’t want him to be as tall as the arch. What other options can we use instead?”

The Wedding Guru says: If you eliminate the traditional arch, then your fiancé won’t look overly tall. Consider altar stands holding flowers or candles that are anchored into a planter base. Alternatively, use tall columns (or pillars) in four corners “around” you. The columns can have any number of items sitting atop them, such as vases with tall flowers, tall curly willow, or mini palm trees that you decorate to match the colors of your wedding using ribbons or tulle. If you wish, string ribbons between four corner columns. Shorter planters will work, but be careful and make them conspicuous enough so that no one falls over one of them. For a tropical theme wedding, you can anchor tiki posts with real or artificial flames on top, too!
