Best Man, Worst Speech

The Wedding Guru Judy Lewis fields this week’s wedding questions. Today: Best Man, Worst Speech

Aaron asks: “My best friend is going to be my best man. He’s a great guy, but sometimes when he drinks a bit too much, he tends to get carried away. I’m afraid that he’ll get out of control when it comes to giving the speech/toast at the reception. Any ideas?”

Dear Aaron: I would start out by having a long talk with your friend. Tell him as gently as you can that he needs to stay sober, “or else.” If you get the feeling that he thinks that will ruin his evening, or he doesn’t see how it’s possible, then perhaps you should either consider picking another best man, or pass the honor off to someone else. Whoever is finally assigned the job, give that person the parameters of the speech/toast content in which you expect him to remain. Be specific. Go over the topics that are off limits and get a promise that your friend will stay within those boundaries in deference to your special day.

Readers, what do you think? We’ve all heard of the infamous best man/maid of honor speeches that recount your most embarrassing moments — especially the ones that might get you in trouble after the reception.
