Bridal Shower Gifts: Help Me Find the Perfect Gift for My Goddaughter

A godmother has trouble finding the right bridal shower gift. The Wedding Guru, to the rescue!

Traditions of yesteryear are changing so quickly that it’s often difficult to keep up with them. It’s understandable that a senior might have a senior moment about what to do.

The godmother of a Hudson Valley bride asks…

“I have been invited to my goddaughter’s shower and, of course, to her wedding. In years past, a shower gift was much simpler than a wedding gift. I understand that things have changed and want to make sure that I do the right thing. Can you help?”

The Wedding Guru says…

In a nutshell, there are no set rules regarding shower gifts, due in large measure to the fact that there are so many kinds of showers. They range from simple, intimate parties that require a modest gift for the couple’s home, to those that are almost like mini-weddings at which the bride receives expensive items. If there is any rule of thumb, it’s that shower gifts can be far less expensive than wedding gifts.

Your best bet is to consult with whomever it is who’s throwing the shower in order to get a heads up of the magnitude of the party. This way, you won’t be over the top (or under the bottom). Because the bride is your goddaughter, I suggest a meaningful gift that reminds the couple of you when it’s used. A crystal pitcher or vase would be perfect: you can never have enough of either of those items, and you can get each in a variety of price points. Good luck and have fun!
