The Dangers of Posting About Your Wedding on Facebook

Do we really want 683 people to know our personal information? (And do they care?)

Because social media plays such a huge part in our everyday lives, it makes sense that its ramifications would come up in the context of a wedding. There is a whole new set of rules of etiquette that are growing up around the subject.

The Wedding Guru says: Before posting something, ask yourself: Will I be okay with strangers knowing my personal business? Years ago (and perhaps still now), burglars used to read engagement announcements that had wedding dates in them. Knowing nobody would be around, they’d break in to the person’s home. Think how that example multiplies when you announce to the world at large where and what you are doing.

You should also think about how you’d feel if a present or future employer saw your post. Don’t do it! And generally, never post anything derogatory about anyone else. You may think that it’s safe because you’re just sharing it with your “friends,” but do you really trust all of their friends?

I fully understand that when you are excited and want to share your joy, you might get carried away. That’s why it’s best to stop and think twice. If there’s any doubt in your mind that someone might be hurt by your comments, or if a stranger can make nefarious use of your information, then I suggest you keep it to yourself!
