Wedding Seating Chart: I’m Dating the Mother/Father of the Bride/Groom. Where Do I Sit?

The boyfriend of the mother-of-the-groom is uncertain of his place at the wedding. Can the Wedding Guru help him?

Weddings often bring out the honest nature of relationships. The stress that inevitably comes with planning details can make or break friendships — or it can solidify and strengthen the connections between people…

Dear Wedding Guru: “I’ve been dating the mother of the groom for over two years. (Her husband passed away about 10 years ago.) I sleep over every weekend, sometimes when her son is around. My question is: where in the church should I sit when he gets married?”

The Wedding Guru says: There are less and less traditional nuclear family units these days. It’s become more the norm, because of the increasingly high divorce rate, to have multiple sets of parents and grandparents in the mix — this, of course, can make wedding planning quite complicated. The best piece of advice that relatives need to take to heart is to remember that the bride and groom (and their happiness) should be the central focus for everyone involved. If relatives heed that advice and maintain a positive, cooperative attitude, logistics will have a way of working out!

I suggest that you talk about your feelings with your girlfriend (the mother of the groom). If she’s comfortable with your sitting next to her, then that’s where you belong. If, for whatever reason, she’s uncomfortable, I wonder if she wants to keep you “a secret” and she doesn’t yet want to show you off as her significant partner. In that case, perhaps you may want to rethink your relationship…
