It’s My Party and I’ll Cry If I Want To: Kids Are Ruining My Bridal Shower

A bride-to-be is upset because her maid-of-honor can’t find a sitter for her kid. Is her bridal shower ruined?

How wonderful it would be if all the events before, during, and after a wedding were not fraught with issues! The old adage “you can’t please all of the people all of the time” comes into play, and often, you’ll need to decide which battles are worth fighting and which are not. What do you think of this week’s wedding issue?

A Hudson Valley bride asks: “My wedding shower is coming up and everything was going really well… until my maid-of-honor (my future sister-in-law) called to tell me she can’t find a sitter for my six-year-old nephew. The bridal shower that my family and friends planned is a formal tea, which is obviously no place for a six-year-old. I’m furious, because I really believe that my sister-in-law could try harder to find coverage so as not to ruin my party. Is there anything I can do?”

Dear bride-to-be: What a shame that such a lovely event is being overshadowed. I agree with you that Nephew doesn’t belong at your shower. See if you can find someone to watch him, perhaps a neighbor or one of the guest’s husbands (who most likely won’t be attending the shower). If neither you nor your sister-in-law can find someone, then I suggest you create a quiet corner in your home or wherever the shower is being held. Furnish it with kid-friendly stuff like crayons and coloring books. Alternatively, you could even set up a DVD player (portable or not) and grab some kid-friendly movies for him to watch. The one thing you should not do: “uninvite” your sister-in-law and nephew, which will create a rift that time may not repair.
