Weird Wedding Traditions: Here Comes the Bride — Three Hours Late?

A groom-to-be questions a silly tradition abut the bride arriving late. The Wedding Guru sets him straight

Over the years, there are wedding traditions that have endured, some that have changed — and some entirely based on rumors. I’d like to think that it’s only the loveliest of traditions that survive!

Dear Wedding Guru: “A friend mentioned a tradition of brides coming late to their weddings. I don’t remember anyone ever mentioning this before. (My friend was concerned that I’d worry when my bride showed up late.) Is this tradition for real? It seems such a rude thing to do.”

Dear Valley Groom-to-Be: I researched your question and found that neither I, nor others, seem to know about this tradition of which you speak. As a matter of fact, some consider it bad luck for a bride to arrive late to her wedding. Being late to any event is bad manners — especially when there’s a whole group of people waiting! That said, make sure your bride wears a watch.

There are many customs, rituals and traditions that continue to be passed down from generation to generation. If you’d like to see what traditions are practiced around the world, check out my article “International Wedding Customs.”
