Silhouette of a Woman Fashion Show 2012

Tori Huntsinger reviews the Silhouette of a Woman Fashion Show at the Bardavon

One of the things I love most about the Hudson Valley is its ability to surprise me every day. As someone who previously attended fashion school in Manhattan, I was initially skeptical about fashion shows outside the Big Apple. It took less than three minutes for the Silhouette of a Woman Fashion Show to convince me that the Hudson Valley has its own brand of dazzling style. Sarah (The Girl in the Check Scarf) and I couldn’t contain our excitement from the moment we walked down the pink carpet at the Bardavon. As if the show wasn’t fabulous enough, proceeds benefited the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation — and many of the models were breast cancer survivors themselves.

I couldn’t help but play Sartorialist and capture some of the Valley’s most stylish attendees (see some of them in the photo gallery below). The autumn chill brought out a range of outerwear options, from a calf-length white sweater with toggle clasps to a classic houndstooth print — a personal favorite of mine. Many attendees opted for the classic LBD — the little black dress — with textural accents like ruffles or glitter. One of the night’s standouts was a corset-like denim top with a bustle in the back, proving that even a staple like denim can look fresh.

The show was divided into six vignettes; each stage of life was represented by its own themed production, progressing through infancy, childhood, teenage years, engagements, weddings, and family life. All of the clothing, jewelry, hair styling, and make-up was sourced from local boutiques and salons. Elizabeth Boutique showcased a twist on the typical “winter coat and boots” uniform with bright yellow and orange jackets that could easily transition through all the seasons. Mod purple and orange shift dresses made a nice homage to the ’60s. Simplicity Boutique went retro as well, showcasing a yellow ikat skirt and a purple floral dress straight out of Mad Men.

The combination of metallic tops and red bottoms is huge this holiday season. Two specific looks — a silver blouse with bright red jeans, and a sequin leopard-print top with deep crimson pants — are perfect for any holiday party this winter. The kids are also having a great style season. I can’t decide what’s cuter: the pink feather ensemble from Quackles, or Waddle n Swaddle’s sock monkey hats!

The show wasn’t only about fun; rather, it served as a moving tribute to breast cancer survivors. Each model who was a survivor received a pink rose and a standing ovation. It was hard to keep my composure when breast cancer survivors in the audience stood up, some even removing their wigs. Sometimes you need an inspirational reminder to count your blessings. Personally, I’m thankful for my family, my friends, and great fashion.
