My fashion obsession started at the age of 13 when a friend gave me an old issue of People Style Watch. From that moment on, my life had changed. I remember chills shooting up my arm as I turned each page for the first time; I read that issue until it fell apart at the seams and each page was memorized. These concepts were so new to me — trends, designers, aesthetics — I was hooked. I wanted to know as much as possible about this exciting new world, so I sought information at the only place I knew: the library. Single-handedly clearing out the (very small) fashion section at the Poughkeepsie Library, I spent many a late night flipping through huge books about the history of fashion. Though my knowledge of the fashion business increased, I craved more. The magazines and books just weren’t enough to satisfy my sartorial appetite.
Enter the Internet.
The moment I started researching fashion online was the moment I found the answers to everything I could ever hope to know. Suddenly, information was at my fingertips by way of blogs, YouTube videos, and articles. That all inspired The Girl In The Check Scarf — and the rest is history. People often ask me how I know so much about fashion. Don’t they understand that every resource I had is also available to them? We’re so lucky to live in a time when we have access this wonderful and vast treasure trove of knowledge where nearly any question can be answered simply by hitting “enter.”
If you’re anything like me and you want to know more about the business of fashion, consider this your guide! Here are six of my favorite Web sites to jump-start your fashion education:
Style.com: Every fashion collection that matters is here alongside fashion news, exclusive stories, and critical critiques. The best way to understand designer clothes is to form your own opinions about them, and with Style.com you can see them all.
NYMag’s The Cut: Not only does The Cut have incredible fashion show coverage, but their blog also keeps you really informed about the hottest trends and rising stars in the fashion world.
Fashionista: My personal favorite place for style news. Whereas The Cut details a bit more about the culture behind the fashion, Fashionista combines the business with collections, trends, and informative articles.
WWD: Strictly the business of fashion. Changes in stocks, who’s buying who, designer news, trend forecasting, buying trends, and so much more. If you really want to learn about the dynamics of the fashion world, this is your best bet.
FashionGoneRogue.com: An industry favorite for breathtaking fashion editorials.
The Business of Fashion: This wonderful site combines fashion opinion articles with industry news and designer success stories. It’s a great way to learn a lot about many different aspects of the business.
