New York Fashion Week Runway Review: M. Patmos by Marcia Patmos Fall 2013 Collection

Borrowed from the boys: the Girl in the Check Scarf reviews the M. Patmos by Marcia Patmos Fall 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week

During my sophomore year of high school, I had an obsession with vintage blazers: tweed ones, fitted ones, bulky ones, ones with elbow pads — I loved them all. But I quickly found that women’s blazers didn’t fit me correctly. They needed to be tailored, and I just didn’t have that kind of cash. Rather than wear ill-fitting women’s jackets, I wore men’s blazers, which had a looser fit.

Because of this, I really relate to designer Marcia Patmos’s inspiration for her fall 2013 collection: a housewife who borrows her husband’s clothes. The collection skillfully combines feminine pieces and masculine cuts with oversized cardigans and jackets. The rounded shape of the outerwear softens up the silhouettes, while menswear-inspired sweaters are shown in pink and purple hues.

I love when designers use digital resources when creating their lines, so the digitized camo print in this collection is a fresh update to a tired trend. The military influence doesn’t stop there, either — I spotted a beautiful olive bomber jacket paired with a camo skirt and fell in love with it on the spot.

Often seen in the collection were neck “funnels” (read: dickeys) for the girl who likes turtlenecks… minus the sweater. They’re definitely an interesting concept, but I don’t know if I’d be brave enough to wear one (unless it was fashion week — you can get away with anything during fashion week). Surprisingly, dickeys appeared in several collections throughout the week, creating an unexpected trend.

I really loved the collection’s sparkly elements, seen on the camo print, the shiny burgundy pants, and on a metallic copper skirt; it balanced nicely with the other matte colors in the collection.
