Your Guide to Attending New York Fashion Week from Home

Can’t make it to New York? The Girl in the Check Scarf tells you how to access this upcoming season’s latest fashions, right from home

Ah, New York Fashion Week. The most wonderful time of year. It’s that golden week every September and February when press, editors, models, and celebrities flock to NYC to witness fashion history in the making. It’s stressful as heck, but getting to sit front row or meeting a fashion icon makes it all worth it.

For the past few seasons, I’ve been lucky enough to witness the beauty and the madness in person. There’s nothing like having chills shoot up your spine when a flawless gown walks the runway, but it’s hard to see it when you’re sitting behind a thousand editors. Even before I started physically attending New York Fashion Week, I saw all the major shows, got backstage access, sat front row, and I had the best view in the house. The best part of all is that I never had to leave my couch.

With today’s technology, fashion shows can be broadcast live, critiques can be live-blogged, and runway photos can be posted in real-time. This enables you to see new looks at the exact same time as people in the front row. Want to get in on the action? Here’s your guide to live shows, coverage, and much more!

If you prefer to watch fashion shows live, Style.com and YouTube.com always feature a live-show schedule during Fashion Week. Don’t worry if you miss a show, because they’ll be playing recaps all day.

Live shows not your thing? No worries. New York Magazine and Style.com collect excellent photos. Style.com will even give you models’ names, backstage pics, make-up close ups, detail shots, a professional review of the show, pictures of the front row, and photos in real-time. That’s more access than 80% of show attendees have.

If you need news, Fashionista.com is one of my favorites. The Fashionista team offers great coverage from show reviews to bits of fashion news. If you want to hear critical show reviews and analysis, look no further than On The Runway. Cathy Horyn’s fashion reviews are legendary.

Everyone goes all-out for NYFW. The street-style photographers look like models themselves, and there’s a lot of pressure to dress for the camera. Leandra Medine once said that her rule-of-thumb when it comes to NYFW dressing: if it feels wrong, it looks right. Don’t miss out on the crazy/amazing outfits. Some of my favorite street-style blogs are Street FSN, All The Pretty Birds, Vanessa Jackman, Street Peeper, The Sartorialist, and Jak and Jil.

I covered three Fashion Weeks from home before I actually got to attend. After doing both, I can honestly say that watching live shows and seeing real-time photos can be just as exciting as watching them in person (it also spares you the craziness). The best part is, you get to “attend” fashion week in your pajamas.
