New York Fashion Week Runway Review: Rafael Cennamo Spring 2013

The Girl in the Check Scarf reviews the Rafael Cennamo Spring 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week

Rafael Cennamo’s Spring 2013 collection is perfect for the girl who wants to (really) stand out. It’s inspired by Japanese culture —as evidenced by the avant-garde kimonos and abundance of cherry blossoms. Looks ranged from glittering, red carpet-worthy gowns to dresses that made their models seem like they were from an alien planet.

I really appreciated Cennamo’s abstract, Lady Gaga-like looks — and the craftsmanship that went into creating those ornate garments. He masterfully mixed sheer materials, metallics, and embroidery to create multi-dimensional pieces. For example, one pink dress featured a solid, floor-length skirt on one side and tulle on the other. While half of the dress was simple and beautiful, the other looked like a military jacket. The dress was then cinched with a wide metallic belt. If that’s not extreme enough for you, try the bright green dress with a panel of fabric that obstructs your face, or one of his amazing sculpted kimonos. The kimono concept itself was translated into many different forms, and could be found on ball gowns; pretty, light party dresses; and airy, white chiffon blouses.

The silhouette of Cennamo’s clothes reminded me of Dior’s — but with a kick. The silhouette is there, but Cennamo’s clothes have that rebellious rocker edge that you woulden’t associate with something as timeless as Dior.

I love Cennamo’s amazing textures and silhouettes, but I wonder, would I be brave enough to wear them?
