Hudson Valley Has Style! What I Wore to New York Fashion Week 2013
The Girl in the Check Scarf traded her Manhattan threads for local pieces for NYFW
By Sarah Justine
I've lived in Poughkeepsie for 10 years, and it — and the towns surrounding it — always had a distinctive sense of style. There’s New Paltz, with its relaxed, hipster vibe; Woodstock, the Valley’s bohemian fashion capital; and Poughkeepsie's preppy-meets-street chic look. Just driving past the bus stops near the local high schools inspires me daily. (Arlington, you've really embraced the print trend, and I applaud you.)
During Fashion Week, attendees are on their A-game. Everyone from Vogue editors to up-and-coming bloggers to junior fashion buyers plan their outfits well in advance with the hope of being snapped by the hoards of street-style photographers. Now, I’m not crazy about standing out while running errands in my hometown, but when it comes to Fashion Week, even I try to put a little extra oomph into my outfits. I’ll usually try to borrow a few pieces from my contacts at the fashion houses in Manhattan to wear throughout the week. But this past New York Fashion Week, I decided to do something a little different: if the Valley’s got so much style, why not borrow clothes from local boutiques instead of big NYC brands?
Elizabeth Boutique in Poughkeepsie was kind enough to lend me some gorgeous pieces for NYFW (see photo gallery below). An Asian influence was a big trend on the spring runways, and I opted for a gorgeous bright green Obi belt by ADA. I really loved it because there were seemingly endless ways to wear it, and the color was a lot more bold than what I’d normally wear.
Belt: ADA Belt (availible at Elizabeth Boutique)
Ring: My grandmother’s
