Locally Grown Musicians

There’s no reason why the locally-grown fad should be limited to food. Here, a tasting of some locally-grown musicians:

Band/Artist: The Felice Brothers
Hails From: Palenville
Sounds Like: “Their distinct brand of songwriting and the lawless sound they’ve forged has earned them comparisons to Woodie Guthrie, a young Springsteen, to the Scorsese film Gangs of New York.”
FYI: Heavily influenced by The Band, the Felice Brothers played with Levon Helm on one of his Midnight Rambles.
Most Recent Outing: Their self-titled debut came out in April.

(“Frankie’s Gun” is one of the best songs I’ve heard all year. Definitely check that out.)

Band/Artist: Rhett Miller
Hails From: Gardiner
Sounds Like: ” Rhett Miller is the front man and main songwriter of the hard-charging rock ‘n’ roll quartet.”
FYI: In addition to heading out solo, Miller is a member of the band The Old 97s.
Most Recent Outing: Miller’s website says that a follow-up to 2006’s The Believer should be out some time in 2008. (Better get moving, Miller!)

Band/Artist: Two Shots of Rye
Hails From: Harrison
Sounds Like: “The band plays unabashed, hooky pop-rock. Some people tell them they sound like Elvis Costello, or Third Eye Blind.”
FYI: After releasing their debut album, in addition to getting some radio play on 107.1 The Peak and 90.7 WFUV, the band recently secured a spot on the Vans Warped Tour and played shows with Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and Paramore.
Most Recent Outing: Debut album Hooks on Tape is currently available through iTunes and the band’s website.
