Poptional Reading reviews the top up-and-coming songbirds around the Valley

I get e-mails from local musicians all the time. They tell me about gigs, new artists, new albums, whatever. They’re a vocal, passionate, fun bunch of people, and their stuff is worth checking out. Here are a few from the most recent crop of releases to cross my inbox.

 

Jack Doyle
Genre: Jazz and Standards
Bio: Doyle is a Broadway vet, with credits that include The Music Man, Young Frankenstein, and The Will Rogers Follies.
What’s New: He’s fresh off a stint at Manhattan’s Triad Theater, where he launched the release of his new album, This Heart of Mine, which is “a collection of a dozen standards, some with a swingy jazz feel.”

Tiffany Giardina
Genre: Teen Pop
Bio: The 15-year-old singer/songwriter seems ready to blaze the teen pop trail, with Off-Broadway credits and a song on the soundtrack for Another Cinderella Story.
What’s New: Her album, No Average Angel, has already landed on a few Billboard charts (#1 on the “Northeast Heatseekers” chart, #1 on the “Mid-Atlantic Heatseekers” chart, #8 on the overall “Heatseekers” chart, and #34 on the “Independent Album” chart) and the Radio Disney countdown.

Alyssa Anjelica James
Genre: Neo-Folk/Soul
Bio: The singer/songwriter has been known for making albums that combine folk music with R&B and jazz influences. In addition to music, she’s also a stand-up comedian (!) and environmental activist.
What’s New: Her new album, Within, features songs she’s been working on for more than ten years.

Anthony Melillo
Genre: Acoustic Pop
Bio: This singer/songwriter on the rise says he’s often compared to an early John Mayer.
What’s New: His debut album, Just Gettin’ Started, features nine new songs, and he’s lined up a slew of concert dates at venues from Santos Party House in New York City to Finnegan’s Grill in Thornwood.

The Restless Ones
Genre: Rock
Bio: This New York- and Connecticut-based band has been rocking out bars and other small venues with a crowd that seems to get a little bigger every time.
What’s New: The band just released its first official single, with a five-song EP in the works.
