Republican Presidential Candidates Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry Bash Environmentalists, Reject Global Warming; Blogger Worries About Future

While presidential hopefuls Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry question environmentalism, one blogger worries about the fate of humanity

Political season is here again. Once just good for a laugh, I’ve been turned inside out with what’s being said by some presidential hopefuls (and, to be fair, some decisions being made by our president himself). Now that I’m a parent, I don’t think about things just in terms of my lifetime, but rather, in terms of my daughter’s lifetime, and her potential children’s lifetimes, and so on. And no hot button issue presses my buttons as much as the environment. While our area reels from the devastation caused by the type of extreme weather historically only seen once every century, the misguided positions taken by our could-be presidents seem all the more irresponsible, and absolutely terrifying.

Recently, Republican candidate Michele Bachmann proudly stated that, as president, she would shut down the Environmental Protection Agency because “radical environmentalists” are holding our country hostage by preventing the coal and natural gas industries from totally decimating what remains of our dangerous natural resources. Another Republican hopeful, Rick Perry, asserts that global warming is nothing more than a theory over-exaggerated as fact by greedy scientists. These are highly toxic positions. While countries around the world implement strict clean-air and green energy standards — for the environment and for their economies — we’re pulling smog reduction legislation off the table because it would cost corporations too much and calling climate change a hoax. It’s a sad state of affairs here, and sadly it’s my daughter’s generation that will suffer the consequences.
